 Best College Gamedays
« Thread Started on Oct 31, 2005, 8:59pm »

I have been to several SEC games throughout the past several years and just finished going to the UGA/FL game aka the "largest outdoor cocktail party in the world." Granted I have not been to any out of conference gameday's, but I'm not sure anyone can rival the SEC in gameday experience. I'd like to start a post of the gameday experiences around the nation... I'll start us out...

Florida/Georgia - neutral site adds to the game. I thought it would take away from it, but there is something about the half red and half blue stadium. The pregame experience is hard to beat as the entire southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida is overrun with the the fans of both teams. Jacksonville burst at the seams with excitement. Very cool venue and certainly lives up to its name. My only complaint was the stadium gates. It takes forever to go in and out of the stadium.

Alabama - Alabama, along with Georgia, has more passionate fans than perhaps any school in the nation. It is difficult for any school to rival Alabama's college football tradition and they certainly don't disappoint on gamedays. Dreamland is a must and if you are feeling historic, make sure you stop by Bear Bryant's museum. I think I actually saw a few men crying in there last time. The Quad becomes the place to hang out and the campus, believe it or not, is quite nice. Make sure you visit if Tennessee or Auburn is in town.

Georgia - Athens is perhaps the "model" college town of the south and perhaps the nation. The entire state is dawg fans and they all worship their team. Gamedays at this venue capture the passion of Georgia fans. Numerous places to eat and tailgate and Georgia fans will be quick to point out the numerous oddities to the stadium (all the UGAs are buried there, there is a river that runs beneath the stadium, the famed hedges, etc.) Definately make sure you hit up a Georgia game when the play Tennessee or perhaps Auburn.

Tennessee - of course I'm partial, but Tennesee does offer a great gameday experience. It is 1 of only 3 schools where you can tailgate on a boat and the famous Vol Navy packs the docks prior to gameday with even 120 yahcts lining the banks. Calhoun's on the River or Tennessee Grill become the main hangouts or you can hit the "strip" with the restaraunts the other rowdy college kids. The stadium itself becomes the centerpiece of the game as 108,000 fans file into the stadium. Many say Tiger Stadium is the loudest, but visit Neyland on a Georgia, Alabama, or Florida day, and you're ears will ring!

I'll do LSU in a little while, check back!!!!

Great post and topic. I will get back soon with mine, which are a good bit more limited than yours, but a bit more diverse. ()- estimated number of games there.

Tennessee (3)- A great experience even if you dislike the Vols as I usually do. The Vol Navy is great. Reminds you of the Navy guy in the Village People. Calhouns was good place too. It is usually where Phil Fulmer meets with the police to get charges dropped against his players. Neyland is about 250 years old and dark inside the concession areas. I felt as if I would get gang raped by someone in the Vol Navy. All jokes aside a great place to see a college football game.

LSU (15)- Probably where I have spent the most college gamedays. I would rate LSU the best. They start tailgating about on Wednesday for a Saturday night kickoff. Tons of jambayla, gumbo, cajun food, and enough adult beverages to fill most stadiums. Great gameday to be sitting under a Spanish Oak tree with the moss, eating jambayla, awaiting a Tiger win. Wear opposing colors and hear a siren go off and be called 'tiger bait, tiger bait.'

Memphis (10)- Before college this is where I saw all of my games and they were usually bad. Memphis is pretty good now though. Gamedays are great when the game lines up with the Mid-South fair which is next door. You just have a grand ole' day at the fair and then go to the game that night. Great place when Tennessee comes to town.

MTSU (11)- I think of button up shirts, ties, being hot as hades, and hearing 'hey pledge get over here.' Pretty lame games so the tailgating was the highlight. At least you werent stuck staring at green astroturf with complete empty metal bleachers scoring you to death during tailgating.

Vanderbilt (1)- Vandy fans support their team and tailgate decently well. I mean that is what rich people do best right? I had a good time here the first time MTSU played at Vandy and won a few years back.

USC (6)- The Trojans play at the Los Angeles Memorial Colisuem. One of the most historic places to play in the country. LAMC has hosted two Olympic games and was built back in the 1920's. It holds around 92,000 and is a sea of red and yellow when the Trojans play. Die hard fans, pretty good tailgating. Nothing like the SEC schools, but a good time with Tommy Trojan and crew.

UCLA (1)- This was a great gameday. I was here last year for their last regular season game which was against USC. A huge rivalry and people came decked out. It was like a big party at the Rose Bowl. We got there early and carried a small picnic. Had a good time. Seats at the Rose Bowl is not like seats in the South. They make the seats in there for like 85 lb. people. I guess thats the only way they can fit 100,000 in such a small staduim. A great experience for sure.

I agree LilTony, Florida/Georgia is an unbelievable venue. I have been twice and was so impressed. There are so many people there and the school spirit is one of a kind. One of the many reasons, I love being a Florida Gator!

The Largest Outdoor Cocktail party is definitely a must. You may never return, but you must go once! LOL UGA is my personal favorite for obvious reasons, but it's also a beautiful town with a beautiful campus.

Auburn's also pretty cool. Great little town.

Great post, Tony, and reply, Mr. BS. I don't have time now to add more. Helluva week at the office. Thanks...nice read :)

There is nothing like a good tailgating party before an LSU game!
